Dorian, after you retired from pro bodybuilding
how did you cope with getting smaller did you get depressed seeing your size
go over time?and do you miss being that size?.Your book and dvd have inspired
me so much thanks piercefitzmaurice@eircom.net
|
Hi pierce,
This is a question i am asked a lot and to be honest it doesnt bother me at all
that i am smaller/lighter as i always trained for competitions not for my ego.
I actually enjoy being lighter as it allows me to be more athletic and mobile
not to mention it is a lot easier to find nice clothes which is one of my interests!
By the way i am currently around 18 stone or 250lbs so i am still pretty big
compared to most people.

you have to be one all the time, not just on stage and you did that, I
don\'t recall reading anything in the past about stupid stuff you might

your life in order. I am sorry to hear about you marriage not working
out that did sadden me some, I know that had to be tuff. anyway I would
like to ask you about a injury I have-my left shoulder is in bad shape,
it feels like it could come out of socket anytime ( it hasn\'t happened
yet) all shoulder pressing movements hurt bad and the only thing I can
do for chest is cable crossovers but I have to stand back so my arms do
not go behind me ( it is more like a chest crunch) doc says he can fix
it but, others say let it heel on it\'s own. I don\'t want to have surgery
and ! a year from now be in worse shape than I was before-some people
say do not do it because it is painful and it did not work. have you ever
had surgery of any kind- if so what kind or was it shoulder, I saw your
arm in a sling in one of your pics. Thank you for taking the time to read
this.

Why if I can ask?
Thank you a lot. themanz@msn.com
Hi Allesandro,
Good question!..I dont do flat bench barbell press as i think there are
many more effective excersises for pec developement, B.Ps
dont give
much range of motion to the pecs and at the same time putting excessive
stress on the pec tendon and shoulders.
Remember we go to the gym to excercise our muscles not egos!

Hi, dorian thanks for you reply. surgery was

I did have any mri(shoulder was in bad bad shape)
had one of the best in the surgeons in the country and
said my shoulder would be better than new, this was
because I had a defect in three of my main legaments
from birth with major tears. anyway after I rehap I am
considering the HIT system it makes sense what
do you think.
|
Hi Scott,
Its hard to say exactly what your injury is just by a description
but sounds
like you have a roter cuff injury/tear. The best way
to proceedis to get am mri scan that will show all the soft tissuue and any
injuries. A othropedic specialist will be able to read the
scan and advisew you how to proceed , if it is a tear then
surgery is likely.

Bubba Morgan has a question for you:-
Dear Mr. Dorian Yates:
My name is Bubba Morgan and I am 17 years old. I have been bodybuilding
for about 5 years now. When I was 13 I really started getting into bodybuilding
but had to put it aside for a while due to a heart problem. I was hospitalized
in the summer of 2003 to see what the diagnosis was and it was Ventricular
Tachycardia. This is were at rest or being active, your heart rate speeds
up to about 150 beats/minute. Within months mine got to the point where
it was about to kill me. I had to get a heart catherization done that
would be an outpatient visit. The doctors told my parents
that the first 15 mins where going good and they were going to give
me some adrenalin to see if it were to kick in and the V-Tach did.
They were going to have to ablate more but when he went to ablate
he blew up my cornary artery and i arrested. They got me back alive but
did open heart surgery and i was in that for
9 1/2 hours. I was in multi
organ failure and was on search for a donar heart, in ! a coma, and on
life support. My aortic valve blew up in the middle of the open heart,
i arrested again and they said i wasn't coming back and they had to
replace it with an artificial valve. When all this was going on my parents
and brothers told the doctors my legs were freezing but they said they
were ok. When really the muscle tissue was getting infected from the
lack of blood flow and i was going to get both my legs amputated above
the knees but my parents would NOT allow it. My parents found the best
trauma surgeon in Pittsburgh and he did 7 leg surgeries resulting in
a below the knee amputation on my left leg and 70% of the muscle was
taken out of my lower right leg, the muscle that pulls the foot back
therefore i have to wear a brace. They told me id never walk again and
i am ... i am running again too. I was 14 when all this happened and
I was not going to give up for anything.
I had to give up wrestling and
soccer the two sports I've done
all my life. So i of! ficially made bodybuilding
my new sport. I did volume training but really read up on you and your
training and I have always admired the bodybuilder that you were and
how i believe you were the biggest and best one with that much size yet
aesthectics to ever step on stage. So I took up on HIT which has made
a drastic difference. Im not allowed to lift over 100 pounds which is
ok cuz im the biggest most cut kid in my school because i never gave
up. I maxed out in my squat though to see for myself how much i could
do with my legs like this and I can do 365. You are my favorite bodybuilder
and I was wondering if you could send me the picture of you relaxed preparing
for cambered bar curls. I have some pictures out of a magazine on my
wall of you but I was just wondering if you could see me and autographed
picture of that. thank you for your time Mr. Yates
I greatly appreciate it

Howard Sellick has a question for you:-
Hi Dorian What did you think of the Olympia decision?
I thought Ronnie was clearly the winner. It\'s a shame that there is
still a great deal of politics in the
sport.
Hi Howard,
Re your enquiry on the Olympia decision, I was actually judging this
years show and can tell you my opinion and
why I made the decision I
did. Ronnie was below his normal best condition and was obviously atrophied
on one side of
his body through his lat and tricep, most likely caused
by
some kind injury.Jay had made some gains in muscle size
and was even
able to stand and trade in the back department where Ronnie usually dominates.
This years show was over two days with the pre judge on Friday and the
show on Saturday. Ronnie had improved somewhat condition wise on Saturday
but still it was too little too late and my vote went to Jay, I can tell
you there was no communication between the judges during the show so
it would be impossible to fix the show or for it to be politically controlled.
In any case it will be interesting to see if Ronnie can come back next
year in his best condition and possibly regain the title!

Hi Jarred,
Just more b.s spread by stupid and jelous people. In my experience most pros
take fairly moderate amounts of anabolics as they have the neccesary genetics
to be succesful.most abuse is by guys who are frustrated and think
that more steriods are the answer , this is not true obviously or the gyms would

Dear Dorian, Please accept my congratulations and my respectful appreciation
for your achievements and for being a role model for us. My question is: I am
a 48 year old dentist who loves bodybuilding but due to job pressure has been
training and eating incosistenly for the past 30 years.Although my career has
been very successful I recently << woke up>> as an obese
(34% fat) man full of despair . Please advice me what would you do if you were
me: would you follow a very low cal diet with light exercise to lose 100 pounds
first and start bodybuilding from scratch or would you train your way to keep
what muscles you have and diet to lose the fat which would take forever? Many
thanks for your response.
Dorian it would be a great honour and pleasure for me and my family to have
you as a guest and show you around Athens if you ever come to Greece. I am certain
you will enjoy. my best regards Nikos Krompasnikro
Hi Nikos,
There is no reason why you cant loose fat and build muscle at the same
time.If you start a sensible weight routine with adequate rest as I
reccomend you will build muscle and elevate your metabolism alowing
you to loose fat. Of course it took time to build up your bodyfat stores
and it will take some time to loose. Eat small high protein meals freaquently
throughout the day to ensure maximum absortion of nutrients and keep
your metabolism high.Keep your intake of carbohydrates fairly low but dont
fall into the trap of starvation or quick loss zero carb diets as they
will slow your metabolism down which in the long run will lead to failure
and disapointment.

and saw you down here in melbourne, I think it was in 1992. My question
is, what exercises could I do to work on my quads that wont put to much
pressure on my lower back as I have sustained a significant injury to
my L4/5 disc, i cannot perform squats..any thoughts on how i can work
on the outer thigh ...mant thanks..firqat
Hi Dimitri,
I was a devotee of squats for many years until a hip injury forced me to change
direction, I put my energy into leg extension to pre exhaust followed by leg
press and hacks.
I would say my quad development progressed much more
doing the alternative exercises, so don't feel downhearted just put 100% into
whatever exercises you can do without irritating your injury.

claims they can do monstrous weights but their form lacks. I have 2 questions...What
do u think was the main
thing that set u apart from the competition? and did you ever change your routine
to add more volume closer to competition time? thanks soo much . kevin
Hi Kevin,
I beleive the thing that separated me from the competition was
my mental aproach to the sport. I was absolutly determined to
be the best that I could be. I learnt as much as possible about
the facts of exercise and muscle growth as well as nutrition
and then applied that knowledge to the blood, sweat and
tears in the gym. To be outstanding in any feild I think
you have to be really driven and maybe a little obsesse!
I didnt have more than a couple of weeks off training in
about 10 years , I dont think my competition can claim
the same! I beleive I worked harder and smarter than
the rest, this knowledge made me confident going into competition. Dorian

Hi dorian ,my question is, I have torn both biceps, is it
posible to build them big again, I am trying to work out hard and they respond
during the work out but do not seem to be getting that look they had before,
a plastic surgen told me he could feel the voids with fat tissue if I wanted
them to
look full again, what do you think. I am 48 but dont
want to stop training, very confused. thank you very
much for your time |
Hi Mike,
Of course I dont know the exact nature of the injury, but from your discription
it sounds like you have torn the lower attachment of your bicep meanining
the tendon is still attached so the muscle has slid up and shortened. This
is what happened to me in 94 and there was no surgical option as there
was no complete detachment to repair, since then I have spoken to
surgeons who reckon they could lenghthen the appearence of the bicep by
detaching the tendon and reattaching lower down. As I am now retired and
not so interested in the cosmetic appearence of my bicep it is not something
I have persued but you may want to look into it. Filling the gap with fat
tissue wouldnt seem to be of much use to bodybuilder as you can't flex
fat and what happens to the fat tissue when you loose weight? Let me know
how you get on

The site's brilliant! Now I've made contact can I ask you to
PLEASE answer
2 questions!
1/ Why is it that Olympic 100m sprinters don't do your
type of
workouts for their legs? Presumably if they did your type of training
then their legs would get much bigger and they would be able to lift
more weights with their legs and also - presumably - sprint faster? So
why don't they do it?
2/ Have you ever run a 100m and what was your best
time?
Keep up the
good work! Paul
|
Hi Paul,
Full marks for persistance, I gotta answer your question now!
Sprinters do work out with weights Squats being the key excercise as it
is functional and works all the key muscle groups ,. quads , glute and
hamstrings are worked in unison and not isolation as we do in bodybuilding
sometimes.
I have no idea what my time would be in 100m as i have never tried. Hope
this answers your question.

it really does make you go the extra mile in your sessions. It just a pity you
were away when I was there and I didn't get to meet you in person. My question
is: I train with a strongman as I wanted to put on
more mass for my next bodybuilding
contest. I have made great gains and am told I am very strong even considering
Im a natural bodybuilder. I am now trying to get him to perform more high rep
sets to work the slow twitch fibres more. But he is having none of it, saying
he only needs low reps and I think it is holding him back. I am nearly as strong
as him in a lot of areas and even more so in others. As
possibly the strongest
bodybuilder of all time what is your view. And am I right in believing that working
slow twitch fibres will increase blood flow that will help him with his explosive
fast twitch fibres. Thanks for the inspiration and sorry about the long winded

Hi Mickey,
Good to hear you made it back to the gym, exercise is one of the best
remedies for depression. My favorite routine is simple, 2 - 3 sets of
a dumbbell exercise with the last set to failure with 1or 2 forced if
you have a good training partner,
follow with barbell curls 2 sets again with the last set to failure and
beyond if possible. I usually finish with 1 or sets of hammer curls to
target the brachial is perform your reps in a controlled way and force
the biceps to do the work especially on the negative part of the movement.

I have been interested in bodybuilder/weight training for many
years now, since 1988. Over those years I've never known a bodybuilder
who made such a huge, positive impact to the sport, as you have. Your
undoubtedly a legend and rightly so.
My question Dorian is - (You aside

of your generation?
Answer
Hi Matthew,
I would have to say that of my generation Flex Wheeler was probably the most
gifted of all, with small joints , long muscle bellies, and great structure.
Flex training and diet where not the most diciplined so I dont think he ever
reached his full potential. Dorian

Answer
Hi Greg,
Rest in between sets would depend on the size of the muscle groups trained and
how much oxygen debt incurred. You want to be able to give 100% effort to the
next set, if you do heavy squats it would take much longer than a set of curls.I
can only guess as to times as I go by feel and not the clock but I would guess
anywhere from 1 min to 4 min depending on Hope this helps .....Dorian

my food, protien etc and trained hard then I started getting lots of sore throats
and coughs. Although I have gained about ten pounds of muscle this year, brining
me up to 14 stone, I feel I could have done a lot better without all the breaks
from sickness. I eat a good diet with lots of veg, fruit, meat, eggs, whole (brown)
carbs and whey, dairy etc. I take Vit-c, multivits/mins, fish oil and my training
has mostly been full body workouts on 5x5 about twice a week. do you have any
suggestions about how to keep my immune system strong so i can make better progress
this coming year?
Answer
Hi Pete,
Great that you got away from the heroin and the negative effects it has on your
body and life in general. Regarding the problems with your immune system, make
sure you are not
overtraining as this will run you down.I suggest a 3 way split, training each
boypart once per week for no more than 45 min per session. Check the training
section on my site for guidelines. I highly reccomend 2 servings of pro peptide
or pro mr per day as they have very high levels of pro biotics which will increase
the levels of healthy bacteria in your gut, this will strengthen your immune
system no end. Let me know how you feel after 4 weeks!Dorian.. |
Realist
Question: Dear Dorian,
I know that in pro bodybuilding what you see are not realistic results. How do
you guys deal with illegal sports performance use? If an Olympic drug policy
was ever enforced how would that make you feel? Do you think the sport would
be better
or worse?
Answer
HI Brent,
I think if steroids and related drugs were not part of bodybuilding it would
be better for everyone and the sport would probably have more respect and coverage.Having
said that I am a realist and I know if testing were in place it would not eliminate
drug use just as it hasn't worked in the Olympics ,it just becomes a cat and
mouse game between the tests and the athletes who want to perform at their best.
I believe the only way to eliminate these compounds is to discover something
just as effective and safe to replace them which is what we are working towards
in the sports nutrition industry.

Bad Mouth!!

Question: Hi Dorian ,just like to say, great site .One thing id like to
mention is of your physyche and how alot of the american bodybiulders used to
bad mouth your body.ie{shaun ray}and many others, I just cant understand these
small minded egotistical morons. Your phsyche had simply not been seen before,
with all perfect proportions they just couldnt beat you mentally or any other
way.
I was sad to see you retire as you would have broken Haneys record. So come on
Dorian, you would have known which bodybuilders were bad mouthing you, tell us
fans which ones you disliked most.
Answer
Hi Will,
Thanks fo your compliments. You know I dont really get mad about these things,
my competition attacked me as they were threatened and intimididated by me
but I just took that energy and used it to fuel and push myself in the gym
and at the dinner table!..Success in sport is as much mental as it is physical
, my confidence came from the fact that i always gave 110% in everthing I did
and I wouldnt waste energy on talking about others as all the talk means squat
on day of the competition.I always say, its when they are not talkin bout you
that you have a problem!

Question: Hi Dorian
Sorry to nag but I have emailed you about 3 or 4 times now and
would love to have a reply. My question is to do with your torn tricep/bicep
tendon. I snapped my lower bicep tendon clean off the bone during train in
June last year. I had it repaired immediately but haven't touched a weight
since. I miss the gym and being freaky size but I am scared of doing the same
again
to the same arm or maybe the other. Can you offer any advice. Many thanks
Myles
Answer
Hi Myles,
Sorry you didnt get a reply..I think you can defiantly start lifting
again assuming you have the all clear from the surgeon, start light
by doing static holds along the range of motion of the various exercises
ie curls hold slightly below the top position , mid position , before
botom in a few weeks start doing negatives and later bring in posotives.Take
your time as it can take up to 18 months for the tendonto fully repair
and recover its strength. Good luck Dorian |

Answer
Hi Joey,
Thanks for your mail. I know from personal experience that a divorce can knock
you for a six!..Regarding depression, I really think exercise is the best remedy
I know it really helped me at times. At 31 you are still youing in BB terms and
there is no reason you cant surpass the level you acheived before, if you want
it bad enough you can do it..Make a plan and go for it and dont forget
to enjoy the journey on the way!
Good luck Dorian
